Elgin Mews House

Elgin Mews was built in the 1860s to stable horses and store carriages for the grand houses on Elgin Crescent above, and converted to residential use in stages through the twentieth century. Number 9 was rebuilt behind its original facade in 2017, keeping the cobbled mews frontage and timber garage doors, now fixed shut and glazed behind.

Inside, the ground floor is a single kitchen and dining space opening onto a small paved courtyard, one of the few private outdoor spaces on the mews. Stairs lead to a first-floor sitting room and two bedrooms, with a third bedroom and ensuite on a converted loft level under the original roof pitch.

Mews houses on this stretch rarely come to market, the last comparable sale on Elgin Mews was in 2019, and the appeal is as much about the quiet of a car-free cobbled street as the house itself, tucked two minutes from the noise of Portobello Road.
